The Research Volunteer Program offers research internships for highly motivated undergraduate, graduate, master’s, and doctoral students to conduct research focused on population, basic, and translational sciences under the mentorship of leading scientists at one of the island’s premier cancer research facilities. During their research experience, students are immersed in scientific culture while gaining an appreciation for the cancer research process. They will learn fundamental research techniques, become familiar with peer-reviewed scientific literature, and enhance their critical thinking skills. The primary objective of the internship program is to train and prepare students interested in basic, population, statistical, and computational sciences to become future leaders in translational cancer research.
Goals
1
Gain knowledge and exposure to current topics in basic and translational science, including the genetic basis for common and complex traits in cancer, as well as population science, to integrate new methodologies for cancer prevention, monitoring, and care.
2
Learn study design and analysis procedures relevant to translational research, including genome-wide/genetic association studies.
3
Observe the different steps for creating a proposal, designing, implementing, and analyzing research projects.
4
Become competent in presenting scientific concepts, including study design, research results, data analysis, and interpretation of results.
