Dr. Pérez’s major research interests include the epidemiology and prevention of hepatitis C, link between periodontal disease and HPV infection, and HPV infection and oral microbiota. Current work, in collaboration with Dr. Ana Patricia Ortiz and Dr. Filipa Gody-Vitorino, involves the use a microbiota-based approach to characterize the oral prokaryotic communities to determine the microbial populations that may be related to oral HPV infections (1R21DE027226-01A1). Her other group of research activities concerns the study of determinants of diabetes and cardiovascular disease, obesity as a cancer risk factor, and comparative research to better understand health disparities in Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico and the United States. She is also currently multiple PI of an R01 study focused on cardiometabolic risk in young adults in Puerto Rico (R01 HL149119-01).
